Purple Bass, chairman of the German parliament, the “Bundestag”, called yesterday to speed up steps towards Ukraine’s accession to the European Union, which happened after a visit by a German official to the Ukrainian capital Kyiv. Pace said in a statement that she hopes for Ukraine’s rapid entry into the European Union, contrary to what French President Emmanuel Macron believes when he said the Eastern European country’s accession “will take several decades.” She added: “It is true that other countries are waiting to join the European Union, but procedures and timelines must be accelerated to give Ukraine a real opportunity that will lead to rapid accession.” Bass’s comments came after her visit two days ago to Kyiv, where she met with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, who she said expressed hope for his country’s European Union accession process to be accelerated. In July next year, it will decide whether Ukraine will officially be eligible to run for membership in the European Community. If the commission gives the green light, the approval of all 27 member states will be required.
