A Malaysian minister sparked outrage after advising men to gently hit their “obstinate” wives, “discipline them for their unruly behavior”.

Siti Zila Mohammed Yusuf, Malaysia’s deputy minister for women’s affairs for family and community development, was accused of perpetuating domestic violence by encouraging men to beat their wives “to discipline and deter the husband’s provocative behavior”.

In a two-minute video titled “Mom’s Tips” posted on Instagram, the deputy minister advised husbands to “discipline” their “stubborn” wives by talking to them first. However, if they do not change their behavior, they will sleep separately from them for 3 days.

“If the woman still refuses to offer advice or change her behavior, the husband may try the physical touch approach, with a tap to show his firmness and desire for change,” she said.

The deputy minister, who is a member of the PAS, also urged women to speak to their husbands only when they give permission to win over their wives.

Siti Zila said, “Speak when your husbands calm down, finish their meal and pray comfortably. When you want to talk, ask permission first.”

Meanwhile, a coalition of women’s rights groups accused Siti Zilla of spreading domestic violence. She asked her to resign from her position as Deputy Secretary of State, she said.

“The Deputy Minister should resign due to the normalization of domestic violence, which is a crime in Malaysia, and also because of the spread of thoughts and behaviors contrary to the principle of gender equality,” the statement said.
