Fans of the French club Saint-Étienne attacked the players of the club’s first football team due to the team’s promotion to the French second division after losing to Auxerre on penalties in the promotion and relegation play-offs.
The match’s original time ended in a positive draw between the two teams, before the match went to penalties to determine which team would continue in the French First Division.
Riad Badbuz missed Saint-Étienne’s first penalty while all the players scored their kicks and Auxerre did not use a single ball to win the match and Saint-Étienne was officially relegated to the second division. After the referee blew his whistle at the end of the match, the fans rushed onto the pitch and attacked the players with fireworks, shamrocks, and commendation instruments due to being relegated to the second degree, and they clashed with Auxerre fans. And the police separated the fans of Saint-Etienne and Auxerre so that there would be no crisis between them and victims due to riots.
