Real Madrid, the Spanish European champion club, extended the contract of veteran Croatian playmaker Luka Modric on Wednesday until June 2023.
The Spanish capital club extended Modrić (36) for one season in the summer of 2021, but his excellent performances last season and his strong contribution to winning the local league and the Champions League forced the club to extend the contract again for an additional year.
And in the context of strengthening their ranks for next season, Real Madrid have confirmed that they have used the services of German defender Antonio Ruediger on a free deal after the end of the latter’s contract with Chelsea, while most likely they will officially announce the arrival of French midfielder Aurelian Chuamini in the coming days.
Modric, who led his country to second place at the last 2018 World Cup in Russia, made 45 appearances last season and scored three goals.
Modric, who won the Ballon d’Or in 2018, joined the Royals in 2012 from Tottenham Hotspur for €35m and played 436 games for Real Madrid, just two games less than former Portuguese star Cristiano Ronaldo.
