New York Governor Kathy Hockall has declared a state of emergency due to the ongoing spread of monkeypox.
“I am declaring a state of emergency to step up our ongoing efforts to respond to the monkeypox outbreak,” Haukol tweeted late Friday night.
She added that more than one out of every four US cases are in New York, Reuters reported.
As of yesterday, New York City had a total of 1,383 confirmed cases of monkeypox, according to the state’s Department of Health website.
Brazil and Spain reported the first two deaths from monkeypox outside of Africa.
Last week, the World Health Organization declared the disease a global health emergency, raising the alert level.
