He told reporters that the gang attacked the work crew while the members were preparing equipment and preparing the sets for filming to begin.

He indicated that the young women attacked were between 18 and 35 years old, noting that one of them had been raped by 10 men and the other by 8 men.

The men of the work brigade were also attacked and deprived of their clothes and belongings.

“The suspects appear to be foreigners, especially illegal miners,” Selye told reporters on the sidelines of a political conference in Johannesburg hosted by the ruling African National Congress.

South African President Cyril Ramaphosa announced at the same conference that he had ordered the Minister of Police to “ensure the arrest of the perpetrators of this crime”.

On average, South African police receive a rape report every 12 minutes.

Despite this high number, many cases of rape go unreported in the country.
