The Ballon d’Or, the highest award given to the best player in football, is undergoing new rule changes that will be implemented for the first time in the 2022 edition.
The first change is the date of the award, as it was previously given in January of each year and awarded to the best player from the previous year, but now it has changed dramatically.
The new date for the awards is October, and players will reside not for a year but for the last 2021-2022 season to become a seasonal award rather than an annual one.
Therefore, player evaluation will take place from August 2021 to August 2022, which is the football season in Europe, in addition to the summer period when continental tournaments can take place.
There will also be another change regarding who is allowed to vote.
Previously, the award, curated by France Football, allowed selected journalists from around the world to rate and vote for players.
For now, only journalists from the top 100 countries in the FIFA football rankings will be admitted.
The method of selecting nominated players has also changed: previously, voters had to evaluate players according to three parameters: the first is the individual level of the player during the season, the second is his achievements in the teams in which he played. played for during the season, and the third is the player’s football career.
