Lebanese photographer Hassan Shaaban continues to be threatened by Hezbollah supporters for covering civilian protests over a water cut in his village in the south of the country.
After beating him last week, Shaaban today posted photos of the threatening phrases they left on one of his car’s tires on his Facebook account. Al-Mahad wrote to the photographer: “Go away from the estate, O client… O dog.” This happened after the men threatened to leave him with a bullet in the car.
In statements to local media, he said he came to the Bint Jbeil police station to file a lawsuit against an unknown person to put an end to these abuses, which have been repeated for some time. He stressed that such behavior is nothing more than evidence of the weakness of the perpetrator.
It is noteworthy that the Syndicate of Journalists in its statement condemned the repeated attacks on Shaaban, noting that the continuation of such threats is completely unacceptable.
He also felt that what the young person is being exposed to requires swift action by the parties concerned and officials, as well as a broad campaign of solidarity. Shaaban was attacked and beaten last week for covering a protest by residents of his town of Beit Yahun in southern Lebanon against water shortages. The beatings did not stop, but Shaaban was surprised when a bullet hit his car after he received death threats from a young man from the same group.
