As the European Union recognized the independence of the Donetsk and Luhansk republics, sanctions against Russia came into effect and a list of the people covered by the sanctions was published.
The list included Russian Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu, Russian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Maria Zakharova, RT editor-in-chief Margarita Simonyan and broadcaster Vladimir Solovyov.
The European Union has included more than 300 Russian parliamentarians on its sanctions list, including Pyotr Tolstoy, Alexei Pushkov and Gennady Zyuganov.
The sanctions included businessman Yevgeny Prigozhin, his mother and wife, as well as a number of Russian banks.
These sanctions came in response to the Russian President’s signing of two decrees last Monday requiring Russia to recognize the independence of the Donetsk and Luhansk People’s Republics from Ukraine.
Putin also signed two agreements of friendship, cooperation and mutual assistance with the presidents of the Donetsk and Lugansk People’s Republics Denis Pushilin and Leonid Pasechnik, accordingly directing the Russian armed forces to “implement peacekeeping missions” on their territory.
