A British judge on Wednesday ordered a retrial in the case of former Manchester United footballer Ryan Giggs, accused of assaulting his girlfriend, after a jury failed to reach a verdict in the case last month.
Judge Hilary Manley at Manchester Court has set a new trial date for 31 July 2023 after jurors deadlocked after their original four-week hearing.
The 48-year-old former Welsh international has denied hostile behavior towards his ex-girlfriend Kate Greville and assault on her and her younger sister.
“We are seeking a retrial for Mr. Giggs,” Attorney General Peter Wright told the court on Wednesday.
“The issue is being considered at a high level in the prosecutor’s office, as is the applicant’s desire to testify. They are ready to do so,” he added.
And if Giggs is ultimately found guilty, the charges against him could lead to five years in prison.
Prosecutors alleged that the former star slapped Greville in the face when she tried to end their relationship, causing her “a series of physical and psychological abuse.”
