Yesterday, Tuesday, Algeria was elected a member of the United Nations Human Rights Council for the period 2023-2025 in recognition of its role as a key country in the region and its interest in promoting the principles and values of human rights in the world, according to the Algerian news agency.
Algeria received a total of 178 votes in this election, which was held in New York during the 17th plenary session of the United Nations General Assembly, during which 14 new countries will join this UN body responsible for the promotion and protection of human rights in around the world, dealing with cases of human rights violations and making recommendations on them.
It should be noted that the Human Rights Council consists of 47 members, elected for a three-year term according to the geographical distribution, which gives 13 seats to African countries, 13 seats to Asia and the Pacific, 8 seats to Latin American and Caribbean countries and 7 seats to Western Europe and other countries Eastern European countries have six seats.
Algeria’s accession to the Human Rights Council, effective 1 January 2023, for the third time since the creation of this body in 2006, will enable it to carry out the work of promoting and protecting human rights worldwide, as well as reaffirm the position it deserves in international community, and will also strengthen its candidacy for the non-permanent seat of the Security Council for the period 2024-2025, which will be elected in June 2023.
