23 children killed as Iranian security forces threaten reprisals against protesters

The Iranian authorities again promised to confront the demonstrators. The warning came amid ongoing protests in Iran in various parts of the country, especially at night since the middle of last month.

Iran’s Internal Security Forces Deputy Commander Qassem Rezaee said in statements yesterday that there is no room for protest, which leads, as he puts it, to “chaos, disorder and insecurity.” He also stressed that the security forces will never tolerate demonstrators pursuing such goals.

The statements came after a spokeswoman for the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights confirmed that Iranian authorities were using violence against protesters, calling for the immediate release of “arbitrary” detainees.

In turn, the UN Committee on the Rights of the Child emphasized that all “serious violations of children’s rights in Iran should be the subject of a thorough investigation by competent, independent and impartial authorities.”

It says at least 23 children have been killed by Iranian security forces and hundreds have been injured, arrested or tortured in recent peaceful demonstrations that have swept the country.

Notably, since Amini’s death on September 16 (2022), three days after she was arrested by the vice police and then transferred to a hospital in Tehran, the demonstrations in Iran have not subsided. In the meantime, the authorities resorted to methods of repression and violence, whether it was cutting off the Internet, using live ammunition to disperse protesters, or arresting students and even schoolchildren.
