Four people were injured in a shooting on Friday near a university in Montreal and were taken to hospital, a police source confirmed.
The police arrested a gunman at an educational institution in the Montreal area, and a number of students had to go into hiding at the request of the police during their intervention.
Police spokesman Genevieve Major told AFP that at 5:30 p.m. local time (2230 GMT) gunfire was heard in a park across from Montmorency University in the Montreal suburb of Laval.
Four of the wounded took refuge in the kidneys and were later taken to the hospital with minor injuries.
The university, which is home to about 10 thousand people, including students and teachers, remained closed in the evening, and the police launched a search for the shooter.
Mayor Stefan Boyer said on his Twitter account that the police operation is “underway.”
Earlier, a 19-year-old man wearing a bulletproof vest was arrested at a university 40 km south of Montreal on charges of making threats.
Students and staff told local media that they were ordered to sit in lines and turn off the lights for most of the day while the police carried out the operation outside.
Quebec Minister of Public Safety François Bonnardelle tweeted that students at the institution are “faced with a difficult situation today.”
“I feel relieved by the course of events,” he added.
In a video on Twitter, a mother explained to one of the students that her son was in school and she was very sorry for him.
