Israeli Ambassador to Ukraine Mikhail Brodsky criticized Kyiv’s support for the United Nations’ approval of a Palestinian proposal to the International Court of Justice in The Hague to issue an urgent legal advisory opinion on the “occupation of the West Bank.”
“Ukrainian support for the proposal is very disappointing,” Brodsky wrote in a tweet, noting that “support for anti-Israel initiatives at the UN does not help build confidence between Israel and Ukraine.”
98 countries voted in favor of the resolution, 17 voted against and 52 abstained.
Among the opponents: the United States of America, Italy, Germany, Australia, Canada, Austria and the Czech Republic.
According to the wording of the resolution, the Palestinians are asking the Court to decide that the Israeli occupation is not temporary, as called for in Security Council Resolution 242, i.e. it should end through land-for-peace negotiations, but rather a permanent state – the actual annexation.
