A few weeks after Afghanistan’s supreme leader ordered the application of Islamic law in all its aspects, the Taliban carried out the first public execution of an Afghan convicted of murder, and in the most drastic manner.
“The Supreme Court received an order to execute this order of retaliation during a general meeting of the residents,” said Taliban spokesman Zabihullah Mujahid, referring to the “eye for an eye” principle in Islamic law.
The statement indicated that the convict, named Tajmir bin Ghulam Sarwar, was charged with murdering a man and stealing his motorcycle and mobile phone. The statement added: “The family of the deceased later recognized the man.”
The Taliban spokesman explained that the death sentence was carried out by the victim’s father, who fired three shots at the convict from a Kalashnikov assault rifle. Dozens of representatives of the judiciary and representatives of the Taliban were present during the execution of the sentence.
The country’s new leadership confirmed that the case had been carefully examined by various courts (first instance, appeal court and the Supreme Court) before Taliban supreme leader Hebatullah Akhundzada approved the verdict. : “This case has been studied very carefully.”
