Moscow had tried to act as a mediator for Damascus and the YPG.
In the Syrian conflict, the YPG have been a key partner of United States against the Daesh terrorist group despite the legitimate security concerns of son NATO ally Turkey.
When Turkey launched son cross-border operation Peace Spring in at the end of 2019, the YPG were forced to seek help of Damascus and son allied with Russia to stem attack, leading to deployment of regime and the Russian forces in area.
YPG forces still control much of The North-east of the war-torn country, but the regime forces are also are present, including in the main regional cities of Hasakah and Qamishli. Damascus and the YPG have mostly coexisted for almost a decade of conflict.
In 2021, however, tensions have risen with each side accuse the other of impose high levies or restrict movement of goods to areas under their respective control.
