The Telegraph reported Monday, citing sources, that Britain officially recognizes the Iranian Revolutionary Guards, which arrested seven people linked to Britain in connection with anti-government protests, as a terrorist organization backed by UK Security Secretary Tom Tugendhat and Home Secretary Soella Braverman.

The classification of the IRGC as a terrorist organization means that it is a criminal offense to belong to it, participate in its meetings and display its emblem in public places.

The UK Home Office did not immediately respond to a request for comment on the Telegraph report.

Last week, Iran’s Revolutionary Guards arrested seven people linked to Britain in connection with anti-government protests that rocked the country following the killing of Mahsa Amini, a 22-year-old Iranian Kurd who was arrested for wearing “obscene clothing.”

On Wednesday, British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak urged Iran to stop detaining dual nationals, saying it should not be used to gain diplomatic influence.
