A new Apple Watch Ultra with a bigger 2.1-inch display will be produced in 2024, claims a rumor from the Taiwanese daily DigiTimes, citing industry sources. This information is consistent with data published last month by Jeff Pu, a tech analyst for the Hong Kong-based investment firm Haitong International Securities.
The 2024 model would feature a 10% larger screen than the 1.93-inch display of the present Apple Watch Ultra and become the first Apple Watch with a casing size of more than 50mm. Moreover, it’s predicted that the new Ultra will be the first Apple Watch to feature microLED display technology. As a result, it will have the edge over current OLED-screen variants in terms of brightness, battery consumption, and contrast ratio.
For 2023, an Apple Watch Ultra update could be in the works.
The folding and rolling of iPhone models to entirely transparent AR glasses are just a few examples of the “game-changing product developments” that, according to Taiwanese research firm TrendForce, microLED technology may enable Apple to deliver in the future.
Since the cost of producing microLED displays is now considerable, it will probably take Apple a long time to adopt the technology.
Apple is still working on finishing switching all of its products to OLED panels in the interim. The Apple Watch was the first Apple product to include an OLED display in 2015, and the OLED transition for the iPhone began in 2017. According to rumors, the first OLED-display MacBook Air and iPad Pro versions will be available in 2024.
