Britain defends itself against France’s criticism of refugees

The British government, criticized by Paris for its “lack of humanity” for the Ukrainian refugees it sent back, said it could not “simply” open the kingdom’s doors to everyone.

“If we simply open the door, we’re not going to benefit the people we should be benefiting, the real refugees, I think we’re going to undermine public support,” Justice Minister Dominic Raab told the BBC on Sunday.

“We must try to support those in need,” he added.

On Saturday, French Interior Minister Gerald Darmanin, in a letter to his British counterpart, Priti Patel, criticized his country’s “completely inadequate response” and the “lack of humanity” towards Ukrainian refugees repatriated to Calais.

Speaking to France’s Europe 1 radio and C News TV, Darmanan said, “Right now they are saying, ‘We’ll see, we’ll see, it’s been four days’.”

He added, “I have a very good relationship with Ms. Patel. I’m sure she’s a good woman. This will solve the problem, but she needs to solve it as soon as possible.”
