Former Germany international Mesut Özil, a player for Turkish club Basaksehir, announced his retirement from football on Wednesday at the age of 34. He announced this on his Twitter and Instagram accounts.
After much deliberation, I announce my retirement from professional football, I have lived 17 years of professional football life and I am very lucky that I had this opportunity.
In recent months and weeks, after several injuries, it has become increasingly clear that it is time for me to leave this beautiful world of football.
It was an amazing journey, full of unforgettable memories and experiences. I would like to thank Schalke 04, Werder Bremen, Real Madrid, Arsenal, Basaksehir and my teammates for their support.
Special thanks to my family and close friends, they became a part of my life on this journey.
I am looking forward to the future with my wife and children. From time to time I appear on my pages in social networks. See you soon.
