At least 23 people have died in the US state of Mississippi, and dozens of buildings were destroyed by a powerful hurricane that swept through parts of the American South. The US National Weather Service said the hurricane caused damage 60 miles (96 km) northeast of the city of Jackson in the state Mississippi.
Local and state search and rescue teams are assisting storm victims, and rural towns including Rolling Fork and Silver City have reported damage.
The hurricane swept through the northeast of the country at a speed of 70 miles per hour (113 km / h), without weakening, and headed towards Alabama.
