Legendary Entertainment is currently in the process of developing a new Street Fighter movie.
Via the official Street Fighter Twitter account, the news was announced. Nevertheless, no information was provided about the movie’s narrative or characters; Capcom merely hinted that there might be more information soon. With 2019’s Detective Pikachu and Warcraft, which gave Blizzard’s renowned World of Warcraft series an…interesting twist, Legendary Entertainment has some experience with video game movie adaptations.

Fans still experience understandable trepidation when it is revealed that their beloved IP would be transitioning to the big screen, despite Sonic the Hedgehog and Arcane gradually but steadily changing the tide of video game movies and TV programs. Capcom and Legendary are expected to collaborate closely on the Street Fighter movie. The developer’s level of sway is still to be determined, though.
Street Fighter adaptations in the past have often failed miserably; the 1994 live-action version currently has a Rotten Tomatoes score of 11%. The film is universally panned for its over-the-top visual effects, divergence from the source material, and campy tone, which is still firmly rooted in the 1990s.
When it was released in 2009, Street Fighter: The Legend of Chun-Li did even worse. The 90s campy Street Fighter adaptation can be described as “so terrible, it’s good,” but The Legend of Chun-Li was an epic disaster that has largely been forgotten. The standard and expectations are at an all-time low.
Despite its somewhat tarnished history in the film industry, Legendary has plans for the Street Fighter series. According to sources with knowledge of the matter, it hopes to collaborate with Capcom on numerous future endeavors. In the upcoming months, more information is certain to come. Still, Street Fighter 6 is releasing on consoles and the PC this summer, offering a new World Tour campaign story mode and in-game commentary for the first time.
