Mass Evacuation in Gujarat as Cyclone Pebarjoy Approaches

Authorities in western India’s Gujarat state have evacuated more than 75,000 people from coastal areas as Cyclone Pebarjoy approaches from the Arabian Sea and is expected to make landfall tonight. The cyclone is located 180 km from the port of Jakou in the Indian state of Gujarat, 270 km from Karachi in Pakistan. It is predicted that the hurricane will be accompanied by winds up to 150 kilometers per hour and heavy rain.

Impact of Cyclone Pebarjoy

Hurricanes often hit the northern Indian Ocean, where tens of millions of people live, but scientists stress that their frequency and intensity are due to global warming. The Indian Meteorological Department has predicted that coastal homes will be completely destroyed, crops, vegetation and roads in the region will be severely damaged, and rail links will be disrupted.

Preventive Measures

The Indian authorities have suspended fishing operations until tomorrow (Friday), closed schools and prohibited the use of beaches, and many offshore oil facilities and major ports on the coast of Gujarat have suspended their activities.

The state government has set up 900 relief camps where those evacuated can take shelter. The National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) has also deployed teams in the state to carry out rescue and relief operations in case of any emergencies.

Conclusion

Cyclone Pebarjoy is a reminder of the need for governments and individuals to take measures to mitigate the effects of climate change. It is essential to take preventive measures and be prepared for natural disasters to protect lives and property. The Indian authorities are doing all they can to ensure the safety of the people in Gujarat, and we hope that Cyclone Pebarjoy will not cause much damage.
