About Tonga

Tonga is an archipelago of 176 scattered islands in the South Pacific, of which only 52 are inhabited. It is located in the northwest of New Zealand and Australia.

Despite being situated in the Pacific Ring of Fire, Tonga has not experienced any major earthquakes in recent years. The last significant earthquake occurred in 2006, with a magnitude of 8.0, causing some damage but no fatalities.

Authorities are closely monitoring the situation and urging residents to remain calm and stay informed in case of any aftershocks.

Precautions During an Earthquake

It is important to be prepared for earthquakes, especially if you live in an area prone to seismic activity. Here are some precautions to take during an earthquake:

  • Stay calm and remain indoors if you are inside a building.
  • If you are outside, move to an open area away from buildings, trees, and power lines.
  • Drop to the ground, take cover under a sturdy piece of furniture, and hold on until the shaking stops.
  • Do not use elevators during an earthquake.
  • After the shaking stops, check for injuries and damage, and be prepared for aftershocks.

By taking these precautions, you can help ensure your safety during an earthquake.
