Sony to Invest $2.13 Billion in Gaming Research and Development

It was reported in a study that Nikkei published that Sony aims to ‘dump’ financial resources into gaming research and development – to the tune of approximately $2.13 billion. It is said that this investment will be made by the conclusion of Sony’s fiscal year 2024, and it will account for a staggering forty percent of Sony’s total spending on research and development.

Sony’s Focus on Live Services

Not only that, but Sony Group has also expressed a desire to pivot towards a model that focuses much more succinctly on live service titles. The article from Nikkei refers to the fact that “Sony itself has yet to make a splash in live service games,” therefore, the article says that “Sony Group has yet to pivot towards a model that focuses much more succinctly on live service titles.”

It was also mentioned that there is a grand objective to have at least twelve live service games in the PlayStation portfolio within the same timeframe. This target was stated in the same way.

In addition, it was revealed that Sony Group intends to enter the metaverse in a significantly more significant manner by investigating various paths of ‘extended reality’ and using studios located worldwide to drive research and development inside the space.
