Florida Governor Ron DeSantis Expresses Concerns Over TikTok’s Chinese Ownership

Background

TikTok, a popular social media app, has become a subject of concern due to its ownership by a Chinese company. Florida Governor Ron DeSantis recently shared his thoughts on the matter during an interview with HaberTusba’s Brian Sullivan on “Last Call.”

Growing Threat Perception

Governor DeSantis expressed his belief that TikTok poses a threat to the United States, given its Chinese ownership. He stated that if given the opportunity, he would likely ban the app to mitigate this potential threat.

U.S. Policy towards China

During the interview, Governor DeSantis criticized the current U.S. policy towards China. He suggested that regulatory and tax policies should be implemented to support domestic businesses and encourage a focus on the domestic economy. DeSantis highlighted the outsourcing of jobs to China, emphasizing the need for change.

TikTok’s Political Controversy

TikTok has been a contentious issue in Washington, particularly during the Trump administration. Although the app faced threats of a ban, no action was taken. More recently, Congress introduced bills granting authority to the Biden administration to ban TikTok.

DeSantis’ Stance on TikTok Ban

While Governor DeSantis referred to the proposed bills as “too heavy-handed” and expressed concerns about privacy invasion, he indicated that he would likely support a ban on TikTok. He believes that China’s growing military power poses a significant threat to the United States.
