The United States Consulate in the mexican border city of Nuevo Laredo will temporarily close, authorities said Monday, after he and Mexico military the facilities were hit by gunfire during the night and trailers were set in fire on downtown roads following a gang leader arrest.
Blows against the consulate and Mexico military locals were reported amid gunfights and chases in rooms of the city which is in face of Laredo, Texas, the ministry of public Security in the state of Tamaulipas said in A declaration.
Suspected gang members paralyzed traffic in Nuevo Laredo early Monday blocking roads with spike strips and setting fire to tractor-trailers, according to the press release.
The US consulate advised its employees to stay indoors and urged US citizens to do the same or avoid the area. The consulate will be temporarily closed to the Mexican public government said later in A declaration.
A senior Tamaulipas official told Reuters there were at least one “collateral” fatality due to violence.
The shooting followed the arrest of Juan Gerardo Trevino, or “El Huevo”, on Sunday, Mexico government noted in A declaration.
Trevin is facing a US extradition order for drug trafficking and money launderingas well as state-level charges for murderterrorism, extortion and criminal association, he added.
He is also an American citizen, a Mexican government official told Reuters. Trevin is on a list of most of the US Border Patrol wanted criminals, according to media reports.
The Mexican statement named Trevino as leader of the cartel of the northeast, a branch of the Zetas gang, as well as the boss of the hitman group “Tropas del Infierno” (“Hell’s Troops”).
