Chinese Electric Car Brand Nio Releases Android Smartphone

Chinese electric car brand Nio has launched an Android smartphone that it expects at least half of its users to purchase, according to CEO William Li. The smartphone, priced between $900 and $1,000, is $150 cheaper than comparable Huawei phones. Nio users who currently use iPhones or flagship Android phones are likely to switch to the new device due to its overall performance and car connectivity. Nio is the first high-end Chinese electric car brand to release its own smartphone, with the company developing it in just one year.

A Smartphone for Cars

The Nio smartphone not only functions as a typical smartphone but also serves as a key for the car. It allows users to connect more seamlessly with the vehicle, such as during online meetings. Nio sees the smartphone as an opportunity to increase its revenue per user and enhance the overall car experience for its customers. The phone is available to all consumers in China, regardless of whether they own Nio cars. The Nio phone app currently has 600,000 active users per day, outnumbering the number of car users.

Europe Market and Investing for the Future

Although Nio does not plan to release the smartphone in Europe yet, CEO William Li stated that the company is present in five European countries, including Germany, and is focused on developing local car services. He also addressed the European Union’s anti-subsidy probe into Chinese EVs, emphasizing the importance of global cooperation on climate issues. Despite fierce competition in the domestic electric car market, Li believes that Nio’s business investments will create barriers to entry and that time is on the company’s side. Nio invests approximately $500 million in research and development each quarter, with a focus on battery charging and the development of a mass-market brand.
