Head of AirAsia Faces Backlash for Controversial Social Media Post

Background

The CEO of low-cost airline AirAsia, Tony Fernandes, has come under fire after posting a picture on social media that showed him shirtless and receiving a massage during a business meeting. The post received heavy criticism and has since been deleted.

The Controversial Post

Fernandes shared the picture on LinkedIn, along with a caption stating, “Got to love Indonesia and AirAsia culture that I Can [sic] have a massage and do a management meeting.” He explained that the massage was suggested by a colleague.

Public Backlash

Users on social media platforms quickly condemned the post, stating that it was unprofessional and disrespectful. Many expressed concerns about the discomfort it may cause employees and questioned Fernandes’ judgment in sharing such content publicly. Some also criticized the lack of PR vetting.

CEO Background

Tony Fernandes is the CEO of Capital A Berhad, a Malaysia-based group that owns AirAsia and other brands. He purchased the struggling low-cost airline from the Malaysian government in 2001 and has successfully transformed it into a major player in the region, serving over 150 destinations in 25 countries. Fernandes is also involved in other ventures, such as being the majority shareholder of Queens Park Rangers Football Club and founding the Caterham Formula One Team.

Response from Fernandes

Despite the controversy, Fernandes continues to actively use social media. In subsequent LinkedIn posts, he did not address the massage incident directly but mentioned his belief that facing crises can lead to personal growth. He also acknowledged the importance of identifying true friends and supporters during challenging times.
