France Reports Over 600 School Closures as Student Protests Turn Violent

More than 600 high schools across France faced disruption or total closure on Friday, October 2, 2026, as student demonstrations against teacher shortages and upcoming budget cuts escalated into violent confrontations with law enforcement. The unrest, which has spread to approximately 30 university campuses, has prompted high-level government intervention following a series of assaults on school staff and police officers.

The Ministry of National Education confirmed that at least 65 education staff members have been injured since the start of the movement. On Friday, the situation reached a new level of severity in Belfort, where a 17-year-old was arrested on suspicion of attempted homicide following a violent assault on a police officer. Similar clashes were reported in Pantin, Strasbourg, and central Paris, where riot police utilized tear gas to disperse crowds after protesters began throwing projectiles and setting fires to barricades constructed from trash bins and pallets.

Prime Minister Sébastien Lecornu convened an emergency crisis meeting late Thursday to address the nationwide volatility. The government has characterized the movement as a “hostage” situation, with Education Minister Edouard Geffray claiming that legitimate student concerns are being exploited by ultra-violent fringe groups. However, student unions maintain that the student protests in Paris and other major cities are a direct response to a “deteriorating” academic environment.

Budget Cuts and “Parcoursup” Fuel Resentment

The current wave of unrest is largely driven by the proposed 2027 cost-cutting budget, which education advocates argue will exacerbate existing teacher vacancies. Protesters are demanding a significant increase in resources and the immediate hiring of additional staff to reduce the burden of 10-hour school days, which students claim are negatively impacting their mental health.

A primary catalyst for the student movement remains the “Parcoursup” university admissions platform. Introduced to streamline applications, the system has faced sustained criticism for its perceived lack of transparency and for creating what students describe as an “anxiety-inducing” competitive environment. Protesters are calling for a complete overhaul of the system alongside a reversal of planned austerity measures.

The disruptions have not been limited to secondary education. As of early October, student blockades have affected 30 university campuses across the country. While some schools have attempted to pivot to remote learning to maintain curriculum schedules, many institutions remained fully closed through the weekend as local authorities assessed the damage and security risks. Political analysts suggest the protests are becoming a significant pressure point for the government as it navigates the 2027 budget negotiations amid a highly charged political atmosphere.
