Pakistan’s Punjab provincial government today declared an environmental emergency for the province after Lahore, the provincial capital, was ranked the most polluted city in the world due to high levels of toxicity from thick smog.

The region’s environmental emergency, according to a government statement, includes the closure of public and private schools on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays to keep children from being exposed to dangerous levels of pollution.
