President Joe Biden has formally lifted the Covid health emergency, which has provided exceptional support for over three years to the health care system in a country that has recorded more than a million deaths from the Corona virus. With the end of the state of emergency, the US administration is forced to adopt a new legal mechanism if it wants to avoid possible political damage that could result from new flows of immigrants and asylum seekers.

A senior White House official told AFP that “Section 42 expires May 11.”

And while the United States is now officially phasing out a global pandemic, the Biden administration has announced that it is working on a next-generation vaccine and other measures to combat any future variant of Covid.

“The +NextGen+ project will accelerate and simplify the rapid development of next-generation vaccines and therapeutics through public-private collaboration,” the official added.

He indicated that funding of around $5 billion is available to “promote scientific progress” and “overcome the rapid evolution of the virus that causes Covid-19.”
