The United States has warned the UN that it information that Russia has lists of Ukrainians “will be killed or sent to camps” in the event of an invasion, according to a letter sent to the UN rights chief and obtained by Agence France-Presse (AFP) on Sunday.

The letter, which came as Washington warned of an imminent invasion by Russian troops massed near the Ukrainian border, said the United States was “deeply concerned” and met on guard of a potential “human rights disaster”.

The United States has “credible information which indicates that the Russian forces are creating lists of identified Ukrainians to be killed or sent to camps following a military occupation,” the letter said.

“We also be credible information that the Russian forces will probably use lethal measures to disperse peaceful protests or otherwise counter peaceful exercises of perceived resistance from civilian populations,” reads the message to the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Michelle Bachelet.

The note, signed by the US Ambassador to the UN in Geneva Bathsheba Nell Crocker, met warn a Russian invasion of Ukraine could provide with it abuses such as kidnapping or torture, and could target political dissidents and religious and ethnic minorities, among others.
