A freighter flying the Comorian flag ran aground in Çanakkale Strait, also known as the Dardanelles, on The west coast of Turkey on Friday. Rescue efforts are underway to pull the vessel to safety while no injuries have been reported among the crew.
The Kapitan Shyriagin vessel was transporting corn and was traveling from Romania to Italy when the captain reported the incident to the Turkish coast safety authorities. Boats were dispatched to the scene to remove the 142-metre (466ft) vessel from where it was stuck near the village of Kilitbahir.
The waterway was closed to marine traffic for work is underway to save the ship.
The Dardanelles is an important passage for ships traveling between the Black, Aegean and Mediterranean seas. He is also among the narrowest streams, with a width of between 1.2 and 6 kilometers (0.75 to 3.7 miles) and a maximum depth of 103 meters to son narrowest point.
