Focus Features released the official trailer for the biopic Elsinore on September 28, 2026, offering a first look at Andrew Scott’s portrayal of the late Scottish actor Ian Charleson. The film focuses on the final months of Charleson’s life, specifically his 1989 performance as Hamlet at London’s National Theatre while he was battling AIDS-related complications.

Directed by Simon Stone and written by Stephen Beresford, Elsinore stars Scott as Charleson, who was best known for his roles in Chariots of Fire and Gandhi. The narrative centers on a pivotal moment in theatrical history when Charleson took over the role of Hamlet from Daniel Day-Lewis. Charleson died in 1990 and became the first British celebrity to have his cause of death openly attributed to AIDS, a decision he made to raise awareness during the height of the crisis.

A Intersection of Theatre History

For Andrew Scott, the role of Ian Charleson represents a poignant intersection of theatre history. The film follows the physical and emotional toll on Charleson as he delivered what many critics of the era described as a definitive performance of the Prince of Denmark while his health was rapidly declining.

The supporting cast features Olivia Colman as Dr. Margaret Johnson, Charleson’s physician, and Billie Piper as Patsy Pollock. The production also includes Johnny Flynn as Richard Eyre, the director of the 1989 stage production, and Peter Mullan as Charleson’s father. This role marks a busy year for Scott, who also appeared as meteorologist James Stagg in the World War II drama Pressure, released in May 2026.

Release Schedule and Reception

Following its festival run at Telluride and the Toronto International Film Festival, Elsinore has garnered significant attention from critics. According to The Guardian, the film holds an 88% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, with reviewers frequently citing Scott’s performance as a primary highlight and a potential contender for the upcoming awards season.

Audiences in the United States will be able to see the film in theaters beginning November 20, 2026, distributed by Focus Features. For viewers in the United Kingdom, the theatrical release is scheduled for January 2027. The film’s late-year release in the U.S. positions it as a major entry for the 2026 winter season, bridging the gap between historical biopic and theatrical drama.
