A contractor and another defendant overseeing the construction were sentenced to 12 years and 6 months in prison on Tuesday by a Turkish court for victims in the 2020 earthquake in western province of Izmir.
It’s the first test to be concluded over the disaster where the contractors were blamed of careless construction that contributed to fatalities. Defendants on the dock of a court in Izmir on Tuesday were charged with causing the deaths of 11 people at Yağcıoğlu Apartment building in Izmir. Seven other people were injured when the building collapsed during the major earthquake, the worst in hit Province in decades.
An indictment against defendants, including 71-year-former contractor Ş.A. and 80-year-former OA construction inspector (identified only by their initials), who were arrested following the earthquake gave a long list of negligence in building of the building. Prosecutors cited the inadequacy use of materials necessary to protect the building against such earthquakes as well as faults in The app of designs and lack of inspection among causes of the deadly collapse. They had asked for more over 22 years old in prison for the two defendants. OA was released pending son lawsuit due to son advanced age.
HER. pleaded not guilty to the charges in the final hearing and claimed that the collapse could have been the result of “intervention” with the building long after its construction. He had blamed the owner and building supervisor for do not report illegal uploads to building.
