A contractor and another defendant overseeing the construction were sentenced to 12 years and 6 months in prison on Tuesday by a Turkish court for victims in the 2020 earthquake in western province of Izmir.
It’s the first test to be concluded over the disaster where the contractors were blamed of careless construction that contributed to fatalities. An indictment against defendants, including 71-year-former contractor Ş.A. and 80-year-former OA construction inspector (identified only by their initials), who were arrested following the earthquake gave a long list of negligence in building of the building.
