Netflix has confirmed that all seven episodes of its East of Eden limited series will premiere globally on Thursday, October 1, 2026. This new adaptation of John Steinbeck’s magnum opus is designed as a comprehensive retelling of the novel, spanning a multigenerational saga that reaches from the American Civil War through the end of World War I.
The production represents a significant family milestone for its creator and writer, Zoe Kazan. Her grandfather, Elia Kazan, directed the iconic 1955 film adaptation that famously helped launch the career of James Dean. While the 1955 version focused primarily on the final third of Steinbeck’s book, this seven-episode limited series is structured to cover the full breadth of the Trask and Hamilton family histories.
The Trask Family and the Central Antihero
The series stars Florence Pugh as Cathy Ames, a role that production materials indicate will be the central “antihero” of this version. Pugh also serves as an executive producer on the project. The adaptation specifically shifts focus toward Ames’ psychological journey, differing from previous cinematic interpretations that often prioritized the fraternal conflict of the Trask brothers.
Christopher Abbott takes on the role of Adam Trask, while Mike Faist portrays Charles Trask. The ensemble also includes veteran actors Tracy Letts, Martha Plimpton, and Ciarán Hinds. To provide greater depth to the secondary characters, the series reportedly expands the role of Lee, the Trasks’ philosophical servant and confidant. This character’s development was co-written by novelist Alexander Chee to ensure a more nuanced portrayal than was seen in earlier adaptations.

The directorial duties for the seven-episode arc are split between two acclaimed filmmakers. Garth Davis, known for Lion, helmed the first four episodes, establishing the visual tone of the early 20th-century setting. The final three episodes were directed by Laure de Clermont-Tonnerre, whose previous work includes The Mustang.
Industry analysts have noted that the series’ epic scale and Western themes may appeal to the broad audience currently following modern frontier dramas like Yellowstone. However, the production remains grounded in its literary roots, emphasizing the intimate and often dark psychological dynamics of the Trask family legacy rather than focusing solely on the genre’s traditional action tropes.
