Abdul El-Sayed’s Resurfaced Football Comments Impact Michigan Senate Race

In the final weeks of a competitive Michigan Senate race, a resurfaced audio recording from February 2023 has become a focal point of political debate. The clip, which features Democratic candidate Abdul El-Sayed questioning the safety and ethical framework of American football, has resurfaced as campaigns look to define the candidate’s relationship with a sport deeply embedded in Michigan’s culture.

The original remarks were made during an episode of El-Sayed’s podcast, America Dissected, where he discussed the long-term health risks for players. In the recording, El-Sayed asked, “Is there a version of football that’s actually ethical and safe? What would need to change?” He further explored the origins of the sport’s “ethos,” drawing analytical links to the transatlantic slave trade and the concept of Manifest Destiny to describe its historical and cultural development.

The circulation of the three-year-old podcast comes as the 2026 Michigan Senate race remains a “toss-up” according to the Cook Political Report. El-Sayed, who secured the Democratic nomination after a narrow victory over Haley Stevens, has frequently faced scrutiny from his opponent, Republican Mike Rogers, regarding his stance on traditional cultural institutions.

A Personal and Political History with the Sport

Despite his criticisms of the sport’s structure, El-Sayed has a personal history on the gridiron. He served as the captain of his football team at Andover High School in Bloomfield Hills, Michigan. He has since developed academic and professional critiques of the culture surrounding the sport.

This dual perspective has led to unique sparring between the candidates. In August 2026, following earlier Republican attacks on his record, El-Sayed challenged Rogers to a “tackle, no pads” game on a football field. The move appeared to be an attempt to reclaim the narrative around physical toughness and masculinity often associated with the sport.

More recently, El-Sayed has pivoted his critique from the ethics of the game to the economics of the industry. On September 1, 2026, his campaign released a video criticizing the rising cost of NFL tickets and the use of taxpayer subsidies for professional stadiums, framing the issue as one of middle-class affordability rather than purely cultural values.

Navigating Masculinity and the Michigan Voter

The resurfaced 2023 audio is part of a broader pattern of El-Sayed’s commentary on “toxic masculinity.” In a 2021 Substack post, he wrote that such an environment sits at the heart of traditional football culture, alleging that racism and homophobia were often the “lingua franca” of locker rooms. In those writings, he pointed toward the television show “Ted Lasso” as a potential counter-model for a more modern, inclusive form of masculinity.

For voters in Michigan, where the culture of the Lions, Wolverines, and Spartans is a significant social force, these critiques are being tested as political liabilities or assets. While the GOP has used the audio to suggest El-Sayed is out of touch with the state’s heritage, the candidate has continued to lean into his background as an athlete to argue for a reformed version of the sport.

As the November election approaches, the focus on these cultural “flashpoints” underscores the high stakes of the race. With the seat currently rated as a toss-up, both campaigns are vying for the attention of male voters through competing definitions of Michigan’s most popular pastime.
