Ford Edges Out Hyundai for Third Place in Q3 US Auto Sales

Ford Motor Company finished just fewer than 1,200 light-duty vehicles ahead of a surging Hyundai Motor Group during the third quarter of 2026. While Ford faced sales pressure, a record performance in its hybrid segment provided a critical buffer against a sharp contraction in electric vehicle demand.

The narrow margin highlights an intensifying battle for market share as legacy domestic manufacturers face increasing pressure from Asian competitors. Hyundai Motor Group, which includes the Hyundai, Kia, and Genesis brands, reported combined quarterly sales of 506,200 units, representing a 5.4% increase over the same period last year.

Market Rankings and Segment Performance

General Motors was the No. 1 seller in the U.S. market with 670,974 units, followed by Toyota as No. 2 with 633,223 units. Ford’s ability to outsell Hyundai Motor Group rested largely on its diversified powertrain strategy, particularly as its battery-electric offerings faced significant headwinds.

According to Ford’s quarterly data, electric vehicle sales plummeted 41.3% during the third quarter. This decline was countered by the performance of the Maverick Hybrid, which saw sales surge 59.6% to a quarterly record of 27,793 units.

The shift toward hybrid models coincided with rising energy costs. Domestic gasoline prices averaged $4.43 per gallon in September 2026. This price environment appeared to steer consumers toward more fuel-efficient internal combustion options rather than full electrics or larger, traditional SUVs.

Inventory and Portfolio Adjustments

Ford’s overall volume decline was influenced by the planned phase-out of high-volume crossover models, specifically the Ford Escape and the Lincoln Corsair.

Supply chain stability also played a role in the quarter’s closing figures. The company managed to maintain enough inventory to secure its narrow lead over Hyundai.

Looking ahead, Ford’s market position will likely depend on its ability to navigate a transitional product lineup. Its current reliance on the hybrid Maverick and its truck portfolio remains the primary defense against losing ground to Hyundai’s expanding U.S. footprint.
