After 22 Years of Service, Major Nelson Is Leaving Microsoft
After over 22 years with the firm, Larry ‘Major Nelson’ Hryb has decided to leave Microsoft (and, by extension, Xbox). He made the announcement online. After contributing to Microsoft’s MSN Music product, he began his career with the Xbox division in 2003, making him one of the most easily identifiable figures within the company for a significant portion of its history.
After many years of invention and significant contributions to some of the most significant advances in Xbox features, such as Achievements, Hryb was promoted to Senior Director of Communications in 2012. Over the course of more than two decades, he has been an unstoppable force inside the Xbox community; nonetheless, the time has come for him to move on.
What Does the Future Hold for Nelson?
The character “Major Nelson” said he planned to spend time with his family before deciding what steps to take next in his professional life. As soon as the news broke, accolades began pouring in from all corners of the industry. Prominent figures from both Xbox and the wider business community expressed their gratitude to Hryb for the effort he had put in and the commitment he had shown to the industry over such a long period of time.
After 20 incredible years, I have decided to take a step back and work on the next chapter of my career. As I take a moment and think about all we have done together, I want to thank the millions of gamers around the world who have included me as part of their lives. (1/3)

This summer, Major Nelson’s podcast, which has been running for almost as long as his tenure at Microsoft, will go on a brief break; however, after that, it will explode back into the scene with “a new format.”
I want to wish Hyrb the best of luck in any decisions he makes in the future. Considering my age and when I first began using Xbox as a gaming platform, I can’t remember when I wasn’t familiar with the video game Major Nelson in the gaming industry.
