Assassin’s Creed Unity: A Look Back at its Troubled Release and Hidden Gameplay Feature

Un épisode à la sortie mouvementée

Assassin’s Creed Unity had a difficult time finding the audience it deserved. Its release is still remembered today, thanks to its particularly disastrous optimization and unacceptable graphical bugs for a game of its magnitude. You may recall that during the first few weeks of its release almost ten years ago in 2014, the internet was filled with images of characters whose faces had simply disappeared, leaving only their eyes and teeth visible. Despite the hilarity and terror of this bug, it managed to entertain the online community.

Once these technical issues were resolved, the world was finally able to experience Arno’s story as he became an assassin during the French Revolution. Players had the opportunity to explore a well-represented Paris and even scaled the famous Notre-Dame de Paris Cathedral, which was rendered to scale (albeit anachronistically) and served as an excellent way to experience it before the tragic fire. Ubisoft even offered this episode of the saga to all players during the aftermath of the catastrophe so that everyone could appreciate the splendor of the monument.

Arno, cet homme du peuple

As the game approaches its tenth anniversary and some players believe they have already explored every inch of it, one player has just discovered an animation they had never seen in their first 150 hours of gameplay. Assassin’s Creed Unity was highly praised for the number of non-playable characters (NPCs) engaging in revolutionary activities on the streets of Paris, allowing players to blend in and hide from enemies discreetly. Engaging in conversations with strangers, sitting on a bench, or pretending to buy something from a merchant were all options for Arno to maintain a low profile. However, one particular option had gone unnoticed by the majority of players.

Reddit user M4TTHEW35 recently posted a video showing that Arno can also help a passerby repair a broken cart, seamlessly blending into the crowd. Although this extra animation for a simple hiding spot doesn’t significantly impact gameplay, it demonstrates the developers’ attention to detail and the consideration of various situations. Looking at the comments on the Reddit post, it becomes evident that many players had missed this animation, although some had indeed experienced it in their gameplay. If you miss this kind of gameplay and it invokes a sense of nostalgia, it’s worth noting that Assassin’s Creed Mirage, the next installment in the series, is expected to return to its original gameplay and will be released on October 12th.
