TikTok takes another step in son Channel “Project Texas” social just granted cloud giant Oracle access to its US users’ data. The storage of US user data in the US along with the application source code is presented as a condition for TikTok’s US service. United TikTok continues to cause outrage in the US. For example, last week the governor of Montana went so far as to ban the app in the state by law (SB419). Specifically, the law prohibits downloading TikTok to electronic devices located in the state of Montana. The decision raises as many technical as legal questions, but sounds like a warning. The law blames, in particular, TikTok son lack of moderation to make it a safe place, in particular for children. But beyond that, the risks of espionage and opinion manipulation are pointed out against TikTok.

TikTok claims to have started transferring user data from the US

The text itself is a good illustration of TikTok’s current position in the US: the Bytedance app is literally on an ejection seat. And so, to avoid that, TikTok is now agreeing to transfer its American users’ data to the United States in an operation called Project Texas. Last March, TikTok CEO Show Chu did reassure Congress that the company was taking the necessary steps to make storing its US users’ data in the United States a reality. To do this, the firm turned to US cloud giant Oracle and the federal government. Thus, the “Project Texas” is a three-way collaboration, and the cost of the operation should be about $1.5 billion. However, the project has recently been shelved. Oracle, an operator accustomed to contracts with the US government, reports, in particular, that TikTok has so far not allowed it to consider son source. The latter will only be available after the agreement between TikTok and the US government is approved. However, according to a new ZDNet article, the queues are moving. TikTok does claim that Oracle is in the process of gaining access to a “secure environment” allowing it to set up its servers and start receiving data from US users. Commenting on the delay, a TikTok official quoted by ZDNet explains: “Many of the core components of Project Texas are up and running, and we will continue to bring more parts of this initiative online in the coming weeks and months.” Obviously, it’s hard to say if TikTok’s decision will be enough to avoid a complete blockage throughout the United States. But if it succeeds, Project Texas could be repeated. Because in Europe, the practice of application and its connection with the Chinese government also makes many grit their teeth. If TikTok takes this from the Americans, it is likely that a similar action will be taken. place in Europe to dispel doubts face to this popular application.
