On Friday, the Chinese Foreign Ministry announced that it would impose sanctions on U.S. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi following her visit to Taiwan that angered Beijing.
The ministry said Pelosi had “seriously interfered in China’s internal affairs and seriously undermined China’s sovereignty and territorial integrity” during the visit, explaining that China “will impose sanctions on Pelosi and her immediate family,” without giving details, AFP reported.
Call to the Chinese Ambassador
Also on Friday, The Washington Post reported that the White House summoned Chinese Ambassador Qin Gang on Thursday to denounce the escalation against Taiwan and stress that the United States does not want a crisis in the region.
“After China’s actions, we called Ambassador Qin Gang to the White House to discuss the (Chinese) provocative actions,” White House spokesman John Kirby told the newspaper.
