Comedian Deniz Göktaş Argues ‘Dictator’ Is a Political Term During Insult Trial

Deniz Göktaş, a prominent Turkish satirist, was sentenced to a total of 19 months and 10 days in prison on September 28, 2026, following a trial centered on his stand-up comedy performance. The court found Göktaş guilty of insulting President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan and “insulting religious values” in his viral show, “Dead Sea” (Ölü Deniz).

Following the verdict at Istanbul’s Çağlayan courthouse, the court ordered Göktaş’s release from custody pending the outcome of his appeal. The comedian had been held in pretrial detention for 88 days at the Karatepe high-security prison. While the court issued convictions on two counts, it acquitted him of a third charge regarding the “praising of crime and criminals,” which had been leveled over a joke involving an organized crime group.

The court focused on content uploaded to YouTube, leading to 185 public complaints.

The legal case against Deniz Göktaş was largely triggered by public complaints. According to court records, the investigation began after 185 separate reports were filed through CİMER, Turkey’s presidential communications portal. The reports targeted his “Dead Sea” performance, which had garnered more than 15 million views on YouTube before becoming the subject of a criminal indictment.

The sentence is divided between two specific articles of the Turkish Penal Code. Göktaş received 11 months and 20 days for violating Article 299, which prohibits insulting the president. He received an additional seven months and 15 days for insulting religious values under Article 216. The latter charge was reportedly an amendment by the court; prosecutors had initially pursued a charge of inciting hatred and enmity among the public.

Throughout the proceedings, Göktaş’s defense turned the courtroom into a venue for the same sharp wit found in his routines. He challenged the premise of the Article 299 charge by arguing that describing a leader as a “dictator” is a political characterization rather than a personal slur. In his statements to the court, Göktaş maintained that “dictator” is a term used to describe a specific style of governance and should be protected as political speech.

The conviction of Göktaş comes amid ongoing scrutiny of Turkey’s “insult” laws. Legal experts and human rights advocates have frequently noted that Article 299 is increasingly used to prosecute journalists, artists, and social media users. While Göktaş is currently free as the appeal process moves forward, the combined 19-month sentence remains a significant legal benchmark for the country’s digital satire scene.

Describing his 88-day stay in Karatepe, Göktaş characterized the experience as one of isolation, yet he continued to frame his legal predicament through the lens of his craft. His defense emphasized that the “Dead Sea” show was a work of fiction and social commentary, meant to provoke thought rather than malice. The final ruling, however, suggests the judiciary viewed the comedic material as a breach of the legal protections afforded to both the presidency and religious sensitivities.
