Snow White Live-Action Remake Sparks Controversy and Excitement

The highly anticipated live-action remake of Snow White is slated to hit theaters next year, and it is already stirring up controversy following the release of the first images from filming.

No, Snow White will not have “white as snow” skin.

Following the tremendous success of Disney’s previous remakes, including The Little Mermaid, the studio is continuing its momentum by preparing a live-action version of Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs. Since the original film was released in 1937, it is considered quite dated by today’s standards. This remake, however, has not been without controversy.

One of the main points of contention revolves around the choice of lead actress, Rachel Zegler. While she is Colombian-American and has fair skin, she does not possess the exact “white as snow” complexion described in the original tale. However, it is important to note that the mention of “skin white as snow” and other physical attributes in the fairy tale is purely poetic and not meant to be taken literally. In reality, having skin as white as snow and lips as red as blood would be indicative of illness.

Despite this explanation, some members of the public have criticized Disney for not adhering strictly to the character’s physical appearance. In response to these critiques, Zegler tweeted, “Yes, I’m Snow White and no, I don’t bleach my skin for the role.” She defended the need to refresh the story and portray a stronger Snow White who aspires to be a leader, rather than being solely dependent on a Prince Charming character. Unsurprisingly, this innovative interpretation of the character has ignited mixed reactions on social media.

Will the Seven Dwarfs have to change their name?

The controversy surrounding the live-action remake does not stop with Snow White. The characters of the seven dwarfs have also faced scrutiny. Last year, actor Peter Dinklage, known for his role as Tyrion Lannister in Game of Thrones, strongly criticized the idea of remaking Snow White, particularly the decision to replace the dwarfs with “magical creatures” in order to avoid reinforcing stereotypes.

However, Disney’s choice to include an actor with dwarfism, Martin Klebba, who will portray Grincheux, has not been well-received by some sections of the public. The inclusion of a mixed group of tall individuals and one person of smaller stature has created a somewhat distant image from what is traditionally associated with the tale. Disney clarified that the images circulating online were not official and did not include Zegler or Andrew Burnap, who are part of the main cast.

Live-action remakes often face criticism

It is essential to remember that Disney’s live-action remakes have frequently come under fire for various reasons. Some criticisms have been based on purely discriminatory grounds, such as the controversy surrounding Halle Bailey’s casting as Ariel in The Little Mermaid. On the other hand, many critics argue that these remakes focus too heavily on realism, often sacrificing the magic and enchantment present in the original animated films. The Lion King, for example, drew significant criticism for its blend of animal documentary aesthetics with a fantastical story.

Despite the ongoing debates, several individuals view these remakes as an opportunity to revive classic tales for contemporary audiences. Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, in particular, celebrates its 86th anniversary with the release of this new live-action version. Adapting these stories while remaining respectful of the source material’s themes is a challenge that Disney faces each time a new remake is announced.

Mark your calendars – Snow White arrives in 2024

Despite the controversies surrounding the remake, there is no denying that this adaptation has piqued the interest of fans. Directed by Marc Webb and produced by Greta Gerwig and Erin Cressida Wilson, the film promises to expand on the original story and soundtracks. With a modernized take on Snow White and a talented cast, including Rachel Zegler and Gal Gadot as the Queen, this live-action version aims to deliver an unprecedented cinematic experience when it hits theaters on March 20, 2024.

Snow White is set to enchant audiences once again in March 2024.
