Buckingham Palace said on Friday that Charles III will be formally proclaimed the new King of Great Britain at a meeting of the Accession Council at St James’s Palace on Saturday.
The council will meet at 0900 GMT, Reuters reported.
The meeting will be followed by the main announcement at 1000 GMT from the balcony overlooking Freire’s Court at St James’s Palace, as well as further announcements of the new king across the UK and in the City of London.
As such, King Charles III would enjoy a number of privileges specific to his position as King of Britain, the most notable being that he was not required to hold a passport or driver’s license, in addition to owning all the swans and sturgeons in United Kingdom, according to AFP.
No passport or driver’s license
The king can travel without official documents and, unlike other members of the royal family, he does not need a passport, since this document is issued in his name.
The British King enjoys a special driving privilege as he is the only British citizen exempted from the obligation to have a driving licence.
He does not vote in any elections
The king must maintain serious political neutrality, as he cannot vote in any elections and cannot run for any merit.
The king is responsible for opening parliamentary sessions, as well as approving parliamentary legislation and holding regular sessions with the prime minister.
two birthdays
Queen Elizabeth II, mother of King Charles III, celebrated her birthday twice a year, the first on April 21 in a private celebration with members of the royal family.
The second is the official celebrations, which are usually organized on the second Saturday of every June, a date chosen because the weather is usually mild.
The Royal Family’s official website states that rulers’ birthday celebrations are often organized on a different date than their actual birth date, especially when the monarch was born outside of summer, such as Prince Charles, whose birth date is November 14, 1948.
Pelicans, dolphins and sturgeons
The reign of the British monarch is not limited to the citizens of the United Kingdom, for decades the swans floating in the seas of the country have been the property of the British monarch.
An accurate count of these animals is held annually in the Thames and the tradition is now part of conservation efforts.
This royal privilege also extends to sturgeons, dolphins and whales in UK waters.
official poet
Every poet whose writings are of “national importance” has the opportunity to arrange verse poems for the king, who every ten years gives this place of honor to one of the poets, and the appointed poet receives a barrel of wine as a reward.
In 2019, Simon Armitage, now 59, was chosen to replace Carol Ann Duffy (66), the first woman to hold the post since the beginning of the seventeenth-century tradition.
Duffy has written poetry several times, most notably at the wedding of Prince William in 2011, the 60th anniversary of the Queen’s accession to the British throne in 2013, and the wedding of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle in 2018.
royal mandate
Brands chosen to supply the King with their products, and as a result of this showing an increase in sales, have the privilege of placing the royal emblem on their products.
Among the best known of these products are French champagne and Schweppes soft drinks, handcrafted by small British artisans.
Companies benefiting from this royal mandate include fashion house Burberry, car brands Jaguar and Land Rover, and electronics company Samsung.
