38 people have been injured in a fire in New York that may have been caused by a lithium-ion battery similar to that used in scooters, city officials told US media.
A fire that broke out in an apartment building in the Manhattan area left two seriously injured and five seriously injured, CNN reported, citing New York City Fire Commissioner Laura Kavanagh.
Fire Chief Dan Flynn confirmed that 200 fires this year were caused by a lithium-ion battery for a small electric vehicle (bike, scooter, electric skateboard…)
“We’ve recorded six deaths this year just from these batteries powering small mobile devices,” Flynn told CNN.
He explained that, according to the authorities, the fire originated in an apartment where a tenant was repairing bicycles.
