Afghan authorities said millions of people in 11 Afghan provinces were left without power on Saturday after two power pylons blew up west of the capital Kabul.

The power outage occurred on the eve of the Eid al-Adha holiday.

And in Parwan state, two towers were blown up late on Friday, causing power outages in the capital and neighboring states.

“The enemies blew up two power pylons with bombs,” Hikmatullah Maivandi, a spokesman for the state-owned electricity company, said in a video message.

He added that five teams of the company are fixing the problem. “The poles are attached to the tops of the mountains and our teams are trying to fix them,” Maiwandi said. He added that by Saturday evening, temporary repairs would be carried out to partially restore power supply, and the full repair would be completed within two weeks.

Police said they had detained two suspects in connection with the bombings.

Many apartment buildings and businesses in Kabul, which has a population of nearly five million, turned on special generators on Saturday to provide electricity ahead of Eid al-Fitr.

Afghanistan is heavily dependent on electricity imported from Uzbekistan and Tajikistan, making its lines across the country a prime target for insurgents.
