Police said a 45-year-old Northeastern University employee was injured Tuesday when a package delivered to the university exploded while he was holding it, adding that a second package was found and undamaged.
The police did not say how the packages were delivered to the campus.
Authorities said another package was found near a prominent art museum and that the FBI is helping with the investigation, the Associated Press reported.
Boston Police Superintendent Felipe Colon said at a press conference that the victim was taken to hospital for treatment on his hands.
Colon added: “The search operation found a second similar package that was captured by the explosives team and the situation is safe and the investigation is ongoing.”
Police said their mine-clearance team, the Boston Fire Department and emergency medical services are investigating the incident.
Campus Police confirmed on Twitter that evening classes have been canceled in six buildings.
Police at other campuses in the Boston area, including Harvard University and MIT, urged students and faculty to exercise caution and asked them to report any suspicious packages.
The city was rocked by the 2013 Boston Marathon bombings, when three people died and more than 260 were injured during the annual run.
